A Florida mother was taken into custody at an airport after deputies found her four children home alone at night.
Irene Miller, 50, was escorted off a plane on Friday morning and placed in handcuffs, according to body camera video. She was booked into the Orange County Jail on four counts of child neglect without great bodily harm.
The investigation began Oct. 21, when deputies responded to a Kissimmee home shortly after 8:30 p.m. The Osceola County Sheriff's Office said they found children ages 9, 11, 12 and 14 inside with no adults present. One child had called 911 earlier that day to report a dumbbell had fallen on the 9-year-old boy's head. Fire rescue crews transported the boy to Celebration Hospital, where he was treated and released.
During a phone call with a deputy, Miller said she was working in Las Vegas and planned to return Oct. 23. Deputies said she had left Florida on Oct. 18. Miller told authorities she hired a babysitter to travel from Tampa each morning to help the children prepare for school and check on them afterward, though the sitter was not required to stay overnight. The children's father agreed to take all four to his home while detectives prepared to meet Miller upon her landing.
Sheriff Chris Blackmon said in a statement that his office will not tolerate child neglect and that cases are investigated with charges brought against parents not properly supervising or caring for their children.
