The Kansas City Chiefs lost 20-3 to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night, scoring only three points in a game that stretched into the fourth quarter without a touchdown. The defeat dropped the Chiefs to a 5-1 record and marked their first loss this season.
Harrison Butker missed two field goal attempts. He failed on a 45-yard kick with eight and a half minutes remaining that would have cut the deficit to one possession. He also missed a shorter attempt before halftime. Those two misses were the most visible errors in a night where the entire team underperformed.
Butker has now missed 15 kicks since the start of last season, including 10 field goals and five point after tries. That total is the highest in the league. He is currently the third-highest paid kicker in the NFL and carries the sixth-highest base salary on the Chiefs roster.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid said he took the blame for the lackluster performance. He acknowledged that Butker has been inconsistent lately. “He’s been one of the most consistent kickers in football. He’s off a bit,” Reid said. “so got to fix it.”
The offense managed 213 total yards and 50 rushing yards. Patrick Mahomes completed three passes on 11 third-down attempts. The Chiefs held the ball for nearly 11 minutes less than Seattle. The defense allowed 410 total yards and 153 rushing yards. Sam Darnold and the Seahawks converted 11 of 16 third-down chances.
Nohl Williams intercepted a pass in the end zone and returned it 65 yards. That play set up the missed field goal attempt before halftime. Williams has been a reliable presence at cornerback for the Chiefs this season.
The Chiefs committed only two penalties during the game. That was the primary positive statistic in the box score. The team struggled to stop Kenneth Walker on the ground and faced constant pressure on Mahomes.
L'Jarius Sneed had a difficult game against the Seahawks. The defense targeted him frequently. Sneed returned to Kansas City after a short stint in Tennessee, where he began his career. He has struggled to find his form since the move.
Rashee Rice missed the game with a hamstring injury. Right tackle Jaylon Moore was out due to the concussion protocol. The Chiefs face the Denver Broncos next Sunday. They beat Denver 31-10 in the season opener. Denver has won its last three games, including a 17-14 victory over Seattle.
This was only the second time since October 2021 that the Chiefs have scored three points or fewer with Mahomes starting. The previous occurrence was a 27-3 loss to the Tennessee Titans on October 24, 2021.
